Héritage Sutton publishes History Sketchbook 42

This booklet proposes a walk along Old Notch Road, which, before the opening of Scenic Road, joined the Glen Sutton/Missisquoi Valley side of the Sutton Mountains massif. Nothing remains of the dozen or so farms that were built along the way. Over the past 40 years, the number of residents has almost tripled, bearing witness to Sutton’s changing vocation. A second article takes us to the Glen Sutton/Missisquoi Valley side of the valley, presenting a chronological account of the natural events and human activities that have altered the valley’s landscape and river dynamics.

The exploration of the territory continues with a text on the living heritage of herbalism, which blends Native and European practices. The Abenakis and early settlers knew how to use the medicinal plants found in Sutton, a knowledge that today’s herbalists have inherited. Finally, the booklet tells the story of the Hopson family who, for a century, lived in the heights of Sutton at the junction of Driver and Scenic roads.
